Pro-Darfur Victims and Hope and Refuge announced the arrival of 193 newly displaced families to long local camps in North Darfur during the period from 2 to 11 September, amid humanitarian conditions described by the two organizations as very difficult.
The two organizations said in a joint humanitarian statement that information received from the Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugees, along with eyewitness accounts, indicate that the majority of the new arrivals, women, children and the elderly, came from different areas in Darfur and Kordofan in search of safety and shelter.
The arrival of the new families comes at a time when thousands of families already in protracted camps face deteriorating humanitarian conditions, with increasing needs and lack of basic assistance, coupled with poor rains, drought and the risk of a failed agricultural season, and the consequent worsening of food insecurity.
Newly arrived families face acute shortages of food, clean drinking water, medicines, shelter and basic health care, the statement said, citing urgent needs for pregnant and lactating women, children, infants, girls and the elderly.
Weak protection and psychosocial support services are an additional challenge for communities affected by displacement, as families continue to flow in search of safer areas.
Call for urgent intervention.
The two organizations called on local, regional and international humanitarian organizations, UN agencies and donors to urgently intervene and scale up the humanitarian response in Tawila, providing food, clean water, shelter, medicines, health care, protection services and psychosocial support.
They also called for ensuring the protection of civilians and displaced persons, and the urgent, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to all in need.
The arrival of 193 new families in long camps is not just a figure, but reflects the arrival of hundreds of people who have fled in search of safety and need an urgent humanitarian response that preserves their lives and dignity.
