Nyala – OnePress
Dr. Ammar Ahmed Al-Obeid, a urologist, survived an assassination attempt in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, after being shot while leaving his hospital, resulting in a gunshot wound and being taken to a city hospital for treatment.
The Sudan Doctors Network said that a group of cars belonging to the Rapid Support Militia fired at the doctor, calling the incident an attack on medical staff and health workers.
The Network strongly condemned the targeting of doctors and health workers, stressing that such attacks represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law, and threaten the safety of cadres who continue to perform their tasks and provide medical care to civilians in conflict areas.
The Sudan Doctors Network called for an end to the attacks and violations against health personnel, and to provide them with the necessary protection while performing their duties, especially in war-affected areas where the need for medical services is high.
It also called on local and international bodies to take urgent measures to protect health workers and hold those responsible for targeting them accountable.
