South Darfur recorded 47 maternal deaths in the first half of this year, according to a report by the state’s health ministry.

The report, seen by OnePress, found that only 8 out of 21 localities were reporting maternal deaths, while 13 localities had no data.

The Ministry of Health warned that the absence of reports is an indicator of the absence of deaths in the localities that did not report, pointing out that the lack of information is linked to the difficulty of access to some areas, the lack of means of communication, in addition to the lack of health cadres.

The report pointed out that postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality, in light of the high rates of home births, as well as health complications associated with malaria, hepatitis, jaundice and anaemia, as well as the irregular follow-up health of women during pregnancy.
