The humanitarian situation of hundreds of refugees from South Sudan residing in the town of Yes in East Darfur is worsening, with severe shortages of food, shelter and basic needs, in conjunction with the near absence of international humanitarian organizations, which portends a humanitarian catastrophe as the rainy season approaches.

Sultan Marial Kul Dual, a spokesman for the refugees, said that the conditions of the camp’s residents are worsening day by day due to the lack of organized humanitarian support and the absence of relief interventions that would meet their minimum living needs, stressing that the refugees lack basic necessities, including food and shelter materials.

The majority of refugees depended entirely on the assistance of local residents, philanthropists and emergency rooms, but such assistance remained limited and disproportionate to the increasing needs, while there were no job opportunities to enable families to provide for their daily needs.

The spokesman warned that the approach of autumn doubles the humanitarian risks, pointing out that the camp urgently needs food baskets, pots to save drinking water, blankets, candles and mattresses, as well as the necessary shelter supplies to protect families from rain.

He added that the rains will isolate the region and make it difficult for humanitarian aid to reach refugees, calling on international organizations, humanitarian agencies and the concerned parties to intervene immediately to provide basic needs before the autumn season begins, and to avoid the deterioration of the situation to more dangerous levels.

The appeal comes at a time when large areas of the Darfur region are facing mounting humanitarian challenges due to the ongoing conflict and increasing numbers of displaced people and refugees, placing additional pressure on host communities and limited local resources.
