The United Nations headquarters in Geneva hosted a high-level international symposium entitled “When hospitals become targets: Sudan’s health crisis”, on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council. This initiative was organized by Abuther Al-Manna, President of the Center for Global Peace, in cooperation with the Health and Environment Organization, to highlight the serious violations that have affected the health sector and caused its collapse as a result of the current conflict.

In his speech, Al-Manna stressed that the targeting of medical facilities and health staff in Sudan has turned into a systematic pattern, holding the Rapid Support Militia fully responsible for the destruction of the health system. He stressed that these practices are a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law, calling on the international community to open independent investigations and end the policy of impunity and ensure the protection of the right to life and treatment of civilians.

The symposium witnessed remarkable legal and medical participations, where experts discussed the psychological and legal effects of the war on the health system in Sudan. The meeting concluded with urgent calls for the United Nations to take practical steps to ensure access to medical assistance and strengthen international accountability mechanisms, while stressing the need to preserve health institutions as safe and protected areas under international conventions in all conflict areas.
