Sudan’s National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) strongly condemned what it described as the dangerous escalation of targeting civilian objects and unarmed civilians in a number of states, including the cities of Kosti, Umm Rawaba and Dilling, as well as attacks on service facilities and infrastructure, including bridges and roads linking vital areas, which have disrupted the movement of citizens and threatened livelihoods and basic services.
These attacks are a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, in particular the principles that discriminate between military and civilian targets, and that the civilian population must be protected during armed conflicts, the statement said, noting that these acts are attributed to the rebel Rapid Support Forces.
UNHCR reiterates its call for an immediate end to these attacks and strict adherence to the rules of international humanitarian law, stressing the need to protect civilians and preserve civilian objects and infrastructure from any targeting that exacerbates the suffering of the population and further complicates the humanitarian situation in the country.
