Norway, Britain and a number of Western countries have warned of the possibility of an escalation of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attack on the city of El Obeid at any moment, warning that any military escalation could lead to widespread violations and atrocities against civilians.

Norway’s ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Tormud Andresen, said his country was “deeply concerned about the imminent risk of escalation on the ground”, citing deteriorating humanitarian and security conditions in the region.

In a joint statement, Norway called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately halt their assault on the city of El Obeid, stressing the need to protect civilians and prevent the spread of the conflict.

The statement was issued on behalf of the Coalition for the Prevention of Atrocities and Justice in Sudan, which includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway.

Signatories stressed the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and taking urgent steps to prevent further violations and protect civilian populations in areas at risk of escalation.
