Sudanese diplomacy in Japan has stepped up its efforts to mobilize international support for recovery and reconstruction programs, as Sudan’s ambassador to Japan, Rih Haidoub, discussed with United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) officials in Tokyo ways to finance and implement a package of development and humanitarian projects in Sudan.

During the meeting, the ambassador reviewed recent political and security developments, pointing to the restoration of the armed forces control of most cities and the return of activity to Khartoum airport, which paves the way for a new phase of stability and the resumption of production in various sectors. He also praised the Fund’s decision to reopen its headquarters in Khartoum and continue its activities to support displaced people and the agricultural sector.

He called on Sudan to expand support programs in the fields of solar energy, electricity and health, and urged the Fund to bring more projects to the Japanese government as one of the most prominent donors to the United Nations programs. The two sides agreed to prepare urgent development projects and submit them to the competent Japanese authorities for financing.

For its part, the Qatari administration of the United Nations Development Fund confirmed its commitment to expand programs to combat poverty and enhance the livelihoods of war-affected communities, and expressed its readiness to provide technical and logistical support for civil transition efforts and future elections, while benefiting from Japanese expertise and techniques in developing institutions and enhancing their capabilities.
