US President Donald Trump said that Ethiopia treated Egypt unfairly in the Renaissance Dam file, expressing his belief that progress can be made in negotiations between the two countries on the crisis that has been going on for years.
The Nile water issue is a critical issue for Egypt, Trump said, noting that Cairo relies on the river as its main source of water. He affirmed his readiness to support efforts aimed at bringing the two sides closer together and reaching a settlement that would serve the interests of all parties.
He added that the United States is interested in supporting stability in the region and encouraging negotiated solutions to controversial issues, including the Renaissance Dam, which has been controversial between Egypt and Ethiopia over the past years.
Egypt is demanding a legally binding agreement on the operation and filling of the dam to preserve its water share, while Ethiopia says the project is a key pillar of its development plans and power generation.
