Most of Sudan's states suffered a massive power outage on Sunday following a sudden technical failure that left a number of power plants out of service, according to an official source in the electricity sector.

Witnesses and citizens in the capital Khartoum and a number of states reported a complete power outage, while large parts of the national power grid were affected by the sudden disruption of supplies.

The National Electricity Authority has not yet issued an official statement explaining the nature of the failure or the extent of the damage caused, nor has it announced a timetable for restoring electricity to the affected areas.

Technical teams have begun assessment and treatment work to gradually re-stabilize the grid and resume electricity supply as soon as possible, the source said.
