The Sudanese government announced on Tuesday the formation of a national committee to comprehensively address education issues, in a move aimed at rebuilding the educational sector affected by the repercussions of the war and economic crises in the country.

The decision came during the regular meeting of the Council of Ministers headed by Prime Minister Professor Kamel Idris, where the Council discussed a report on the reality of education and the challenges facing it, including the lack of school seats and textbooks, the distribution of teachers and the needs of school feeding.

Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism Khaled al-Issir said that the Cabinet directed the formation of a national committee to address education issues radically, stressing the government's commitment to provide education needs in all states, especially conflict-affected areas.

According to the government, the proposed plan includes the localization of the school furniture industry to address the crisis of seating, the rehabilitation of printing and publishing institutions to ensure the provision of textbooks, as well as the development of fairer mechanisms for the distribution of teachers to support the stability of the educational process and maintain its quality.

The government’s move comes at a time when Sudan’s education sector is facing increasing challenges as a result of more than three years of conflict, which has disrupted schooling in large areas, damaged educational infrastructure and displaced millions of families.

In the same context, the Council of Ministers reviewed a report of the Ministry of Health on efforts to combat diseases and epidemics and secure pharmaceutical supplies, in addition to cooperation with international organizations to support health services in the country.

The government stressed that education and health are a priority in its program to rebuild state institutions and restore basic services to citizens during the next phase.
