Sudan’s General Intelligence Service (GID) has foiled the smuggling of large quantities of narcotic pills, in one of the largest seizures in the Red Sea state, after dismantling an organized criminal network active in cross-border drug trafficking.

The agency's counter-terrorism department said the operation was based on intelligence and field follow-up that led to a security ambush that resulted in the seizure of a huge shipment of tramadol en route to neighboring countries across the Red Sea coast.

According to the authorities, 16 cartons containing 918,870 tablets of high-concentration tramadol were seized, indicating that Sudan was being used as a transit point to re-smuggle the shipment to other regional destinations.

She added that the estimated value of seizures is about 9.19 billion Sudanese pounds, while the competent authorities began legal procedures and opened a criminal report under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law.

The authorities confirmed the continuation of investigations to identify all those involved in the network and pursue the possible extensions of the operation inside and outside Sudan, as part of efforts to combat organized crime and cross-border drug trafficking.
