The city of Nahud in West Kordofan state is experiencing a severe crisis in drinking water supply, after the complete cessation of water services in the city and neighboring areas, which threatens to worsen humanitarian and health conditions and expose thousands of residents to increased risks.

The emergency Dar Hammar said that the crisis resulted from extensive damage to water infrastructure, including the looting of solar power systems and generators and the destruction of a number of major pumping stations, which led to their complete decommissioning.

Water shortages have led many people to rely on unsafe sources of drinking water in the absence of adequate alternatives to meet the daily needs of the population.

The crisis comes at a time when the region is still facing the consequences of a cholera outbreak in recent months, amid warnings that the deterioration of water and sanitation services may increase the risk of the spread of waterborne diseases.

Local monitors have warned that the continued disruption of water supplies could worsen health and humanitarian conditions, especially among children, women and the elderly, as basic services decline and access to safe water sources becomes difficult.

There are growing calls for urgent intervention to restart damaged water facilities and ensure basic services, in order to avoid deteriorating health conditions in the city and its surroundings.
