The Sudanese Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries called for strengthening the role of local communities in sustainable development efforts and combating poverty, stressing that community participation is a key pillar for the success of development projects and stability in developing countries.

This came during the participation of the Sudanese ambassador to China, Omar Issa Ahmed, in the work of the Global Forum for Poverty Reduction and Development 2026, held in the Chinese capital Beijing from May 27 to 29, with the participation of ministers, officials and representatives of international organizations and research and development institutions from various countries of the world.

Addressing the Forum on Social Mobilization and Community Participation, the Minister said that sustainable development cannot be achieved through Governments alone, but requires the involvement of local communities in planning, implementation and oversight as key partners in the development process.

He pointed out that Sudan, along with a number of African countries, faces challenges related to poverty, unemployment, food insecurity and conflicts related to natural resources, pointing out that the future of the livestock, fisheries and agriculture sectors is linked to empowering local communities and enhancing their role in production and value chains.

The minister praised China's experience in fighting poverty, saying it represents a successful international model that relied on supporting rural communities and small producers, building local capacity, linking communities to markets, and developing infrastructure.

He explained that Sudan is continuing to implement livestock production city projects in a number of states as developmental projects aimed at creating jobs, empowering youth and women and promoting local development, stressing that community participation also contributes to reducing conflicts related to natural resources and enhancing social cohesion.

The forum discussed the mechanisms of enhancing international cooperation in the fight against poverty and the exchange of development experiences, and the participants reviewed the plan of action of the Global Partnership for Poverty Reduction and Development for the period 2026-2028, and a number of initiatives aimed at transferring experiences and enhancing the participation of youth in development efforts.

The minister stressed Sudan’s commitment to supporting international initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable development and expanding international partnerships, stressing that eradicating poverty is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of governments, local communities and international partners.

On the sidelines of the visit, the minister will hold a series of meetings with specialized Chinese institutions and companies to discuss opportunities for cooperation and investment in the livestock sector.
