Ghana’s government has officially announced the launch of a new e-Visa system, exempting citizens of all African countries from visa fees, in a move described by authorities as aimed at boosting tourism, trade and investment and facilitating movement within the African continent.
President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the new system on May 25, 2026, stressing that the e-visa will allow visitors to complete travel procedures online without having to check with embassies or consulates in most cases.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okodzito Ablakoa said the decision includes the total elimination of visa fees for African citizens, adding that the move represents an important shift towards enhancing regional integration and facilitating the movement of individuals and capital between African countries.
Through the new system, Ghana aims to improve its attractiveness as a destination for tourism, business and investment, as well as modernize its immigration and border control system through digital services.
The Ghanaian government had previously announced its intention to introduce a visa or fee waiver policy for nationals of African countries from May 25, 2026, before the move officially went into effect with the launch of the new e-visa platform.
