The Sudanese government announced that its relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have entered an advanced stage of political and diplomatic coordination, in preparation for the launch of a joint strategic cooperation council between the two countries following the Eid al-Adha holiday.
The announcement came during an official farewell ceremony for the Saudi ambassador to Sudan, Ali bin Hassan Jaafar, held in Port Sudan with the participation of a number of ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps.
Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mohiuddin Salem said Khartoum and Riyadh are laying the groundwork for the founding meeting of the Joint Strategic Cooperation Council, noting that the upcoming council will form an institutional framework to manage political, economic and security cooperation between the two countries.
He added that the step aims to upgrade bilateral relations to the level of "comprehensive and sustainable partnership" in light of the increasing rapprochement between the two sides during the recent period.
For his part, the Saudi ambassador stressed the keenness of the Kingdom's leadership to support Sudan's security, stability and territorial integrity, praising what he described as the professionalism of Sudanese diplomacy in managing current challenges.
Jafar also expressed his appreciation for the level of cooperation he found from Sudanese official institutions throughout his tenure, stressing the Kingdom's continued interest in developing bilateral relations and enhancing areas of joint coordination.
