The Sudanese government announced the launch of public tenders next week for the maintenance and rehabilitation of major roads and bridges in the capital Khartoum, as part of a plan aimed at restoring basic services and preparing the environment for the return of citizens.

The announcement came during a meeting of the Supreme Committee to create a suitable environment for the return of the population to Khartoum state, headed by Prime Minister Kamel Idris, where the Committee discussed the files of infrastructure and basic services in the capital.

Khartoum Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza reviewed a report on efforts to address water crises and rehabilitate networks, while the Director of the State Water Authority, Engineer Mohamed Ahmed Awad, made a presentation on plans to expand water supply and address technical obstacles.

In the electricity sector, the committee discussed an emergency plan until the end of 2026 presented by the Director General of Sudan Electricity Engineer Abdullah Mohamed Ali, focusing on the introduction of new generating units, the maintenance of more than 1100 electrical transformers, and the improvement of distribution networks to reduce frequent interruptions.

Minister of Culture, Information, Antiquities and Tourism Khalid Al-Iseer said that the tenders will be made in a "spirit of transparency" to ensure the implementation of maintenance work through qualified companies, noting that Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Saif Al-Nasser Al-Tijani Haroun reviewed during the meeting the plans to rehabilitate vital bridges in the capital, foremost of which are the Halafaya Bridges, Mak Nimr and Chambat.

He added that the Supreme Committee stressed the need to speed up the restoration of basic services in the capital, stressing the Prime Minister's pledge to provide financial and logistical support to the sectoral committees to ensure the completion of rehabilitation work urgently in preparation for the safe and stable return of citizens.
