The protection of civilians in Sudan remains contingent on addressing the root causes of the conflict, ending impunity, and immediately ending support for and the arming of armed groups targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.

During a meeting of the Security Council on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, the Permanent Mission of the Sudan to the United Nations stressed that respect for the sovereignty of States and support for their national institutions are the basis of any efforts to achieve sustainable peace and stability.

The mission called on the international community to adopt “balanced and principled” positions rejecting double standards in dealing with crises, while ensuring effective mechanisms for accountability for serious violations of international humanitarian law.

It also warned of the increasing risks of the use of modern military techniques, especially drones, by non-state groups, saying that this poses a direct threat to civilians and regional security.

At the end of her speech to the UN Security Council, the Sudanese mission affirmed Khartoum’s commitment to continue cooperating with the United Nations and regional and international partners to support efforts to protect civilians and achieve a comprehensive peace that ends the humanitarian crisis in the country.
