The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says the humanitarian crisis in Sudan has reached “unprecedented” levels, with some 34 million people in need of humanitarian assistance this year as the conflict continues and living conditions worsen across the country.
Humanitarian partners launched an international appeal for $2.9 billion to provide life-saving assistance to more than 20 million people affected by the crisis.
Humanitarian organizations reached nearly 9 million people between January and April, but only a limited proportion of beneficiaries received multisectoral support, reflecting a significant gap between actual needs and available resources.
The UN office attributed the limited response to continued restrictions on humanitarian access, the deteriorating security situation in a number of areas, and a lack of international funding to scale up relief operations.
These warnings come at a time of increasing international calls to intensify humanitarian support to Sudan and facilitate relief access to the affected areas, in light of the continuing security and logistical challenges that hinder the work of humanitarian organizations.
