The Sudanese Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) called for the adoption of cultural dialogue as the key to achieving sustainable peace in Sudan, stressing that the country’s cultural diversity is a pillar of national identity and a civilizational wealth that should be preserved, on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity.
The Movement said in a statement that Sudan is characterized by a wide cultural, linguistic and societal diversity that includes hundreds of cultural patterns stretching across different regions, considering that this diversity is an essential element in the formation of the Sudanese state and society.
The movement expressed concern over what it described as the increasing use of social media platforms to spread hate speech and incitement against social, tribal and regional components, in light of the tensions in the country, warning that calls for killing, genocide or racial incitement are grave violations under international law.
The statement added that the absence of effective cultural dialogue mechanisms contributes to exacerbating conflicts within societies, pointing to the importance of inspiring traditional Sudanese experiences in managing differences through local customs and community dialogue.
The Movement reiterated its call to reject the discourse of discrimination and division, and to promote the values of tolerance and coexistence, stressing that preserving the social fabric is a key factor to protect Sudan from the risks of disintegration, especially in sensitive areas, including the east of the country.
