Local authorities in the Jebel Alya area south of the Sudanese capital Khartoum have issued a decision to prevent the passage of heavy vehicles exceeding five tons of cargo through the Jebel Alya reservoir crossing, as part of measures they said were aimed at protecting the vital facility and maintaining the integrity of the infrastructure.
According to the administrative decision issued Tuesday by the executive director of Jabal Alawal, the authorities will impose sanctions on violators, including the seizure of vehicles, the withdrawal of driving licenses, as well as fines ranging from one million to five million Sudanese pounds.
The resolution also stipulated that violators should bear the costs of any damage that may be caused to the reservoir or its facilities as a result of the transit of heavy vehicles.
The locality said that the decision was based on the Local Government Law of 2017 and after coordination with the local security services, in light of concerns regarding the safety of the crossing and ensuring the flow of traffic.
The authorities called on transport companies and drivers to abide by the new measures, stressing that the implementation of the decision will begin immediately after it is issued.
