The Federal Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, began his participation in the 79th session of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva with an expanded coordination meeting that included the Sudanese delegation and members of the Permanent Mission of the Sudan to the United Nations to discuss the priorities of the health sector and coordinate positions on the issues raised during the meetings.
The meeting discussed the challenges facing the health system in Sudan in light of the continuation of the war, focusing on the damage to medical infrastructure and hospitals as a result of targeting and destruction, and the resulting significant decline in treatment services and the departure of a number of health facilities from service.
The meeting also discussed the obstacles associated with efforts to combat epidemics, tropical and seasonal diseases, as well as arrangements to put the Prime Minister's Malaria Initiative on the agenda of the health discussions at the General Assembly.
The participants agreed to coordinate the programme of bilateral meetings to be held by the Minister and the accompanying delegation with the Ministers of Health and heads of the participating delegations, as well as officials of international and humanitarian organizations, with the aim of mobilizing support for the rehabilitation of the health sector and ensuring the continued flow of urgent medical and pharmaceutical supplies to Sudan.
