A large-scale fire broke out yesterday evening in the Nakheel camp for displaced people in the Khazzed Jadid area of Sheiria locality in East Darfur, completely destroying the homes of 1,071 families and losing their property, local authorities said.
This incident is the fourth of its kind in the camp during the recent period, in light of increasing fears of a recurrence of fires inside the displacement camps in the Darfur region, including camps in the areas of Tawila and Qulu.
The Director General of the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Darfur Regional Government and Humanitarian Coordinator, Abdelbaki Mohamed Hamed, said that the competent authorities took the initiative to communicate with humanitarian partners immediately after the fire, pointing out that the field conditions prevented direct access to those affected.
He added that the regional government is working in coordination with the Humanitarian Aid Commission to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and relief to the affected families, announcing arrangements for meetings and appeals during the next week with the relevant authorities to discuss the mechanisms of response to the crisis.
The regional official called on international and UN organizations to intervene urgently to provide basic humanitarian needs, including shelter, food, health and medical services, as well as to support safety and fire prevention programs within the camps for displaced people.
