A Sudanese citizen revealed that a group of people were caught inside his house manufacturing municipal liquor after returning to inspect the house after a period of absence, in an incident that reflects the increasing exploitation of abandoned houses in some war-affected neighborhoods.
The owner of the house said that he was surprised when he entered the house with men and women from one of the neighboring countries preparing alcohol inside the house, adding that he asked them not to take out any contents before he left the site and called the police on the number 999.
According to his account, a police force arrived at the scene within about a quarter of an hour, carrying out a raid that resulted in the transfer of seizures, while most of the people managed to escape, while one person was arrested inside one of the rooms.
He added that the suspect justified his presence inside the house as he entered "to shower and change his clothes," before being taken to the police station and opened a report of the incident, noting that he later asked the authorities to just take a pledge not to approach the house again.
The owner of the house explained that he later returned with members of his family to inspect the contents of the house, where they were able to find part of the furniture and belongings lost, including a refrigerator found inside one of the neighboring houses, before re-securing the house with new locks.
He further noted that electricity and water services were still available in the neighbourhood, and that a number of residents had gradually started returning to their homes after months of displacement.
