Health authorities in the northern state of Sudan have recorded a remarkable rise in dengue infections, with the spread of the disease in a number of areas in the localities of Merowe and Dibba, amid warnings of a worsening health situation if control and prevention efforts are not intensified.

The General Directorate of Health Emergencies at the Ministry of Health in the state said that the cumulative total of cases of dengue fever since February until May 6 reached 369 cases, including one death, while the new recorded cases ranged between 34 and 36 according to the latest official updates.

According to the health data, the spread of the disease to 14 areas in the locality of Meroe and three areas in the locality of Al-Daba, at a time when the area of the “marine zone” emerged as the main focus of the epidemic after recording 209 cases, more than half of the total reported infections.

Health authorities have called on residents to step up campaigns to drain stagnant water and combat the disease-carrying mosquitoes, stressing that rapid community intervention is a critical factor in reducing the spread of infection.

This development comes against the backdrop of growing health challenges faced by several regions in Sudan, with continued pressures on health services and epidemic control programs.
